Playa Honda

Playa Honda is located close to La Manga, just off the Cartagena Road, and some 35 minutes drive from Murcia San Javier Airport.

Beach
The resort enjoys a gently shelving beach directly onto the placid Mar Menor. Playa Honda has a short promenade backed by the urbanisation of villas and apartments. There are facilities on the beach for water sports. There are also showers.

Shopping
There is a supermarket close to the seafront, within the resort. Nearby, on the main La Manga strip, there are many further shops, and there are also banks. There is a pharmacy close to the shop in the resort.

Eating out
There are several restaurants and bars within the resort. The La Manga strip, a short ride away, has many further options.

Cuisine
The plains of Murcia are incredibly fertile, and produce a vast array of fresh fruit and vegetables, which make up the base ingredients of the regions cuisine. Rice is also staple here, and finds it's way into many dishes.

The abundant and varied seafood from the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, along with game and farmed meat from the mountains complete the picture.

Some typical dishes include: Arroz y Conejo (rice with rabbit), Arroz de Verduras (Rice and Vegetables), Arroz y Costillejas (rice and ribs), Arroz Marinero (seafood rice) and Paella Huertana, a delicious vegetarian paella.

Non-rice dishes specialities include Potaje, a rich stew dish; Menestra, a dish of sautéed vegetables; Habas con jamón" (ham and broad beans and Caldo Murciano, a local soup dish. The king prawns fished in the area are also particularly fine, and the Huevas de Mújol, a type of caviar, is also a high delicacy of the region.

Many desserts and cakes, often based on the local almonds, are made here. Try the famous “Jijona” ice-creams which are still made traditionally and have genuine “Nougat” ice-cream, also made with the almonds of the region.

The fine wines from Jumilla and Yecla are known throughout Spain and beyond for their earthy, full bodied, rounded, fruity flavours.

Nightlife
Playa Honda is a quiet and relaxing place, with very little commercial activity. The La Manga Club, and the La Manga strip offer sophisticated or simple nightlife pursuits.

Markets
The La Manga market takes place every Thursday, offering a huge range of goods to a busy crowd.

Excursions
Murcia is just a short drive away and offers cultural attractions and shopping. Cartagena has a proud seafaring heritage, a visit to this city rewards with interesting architecture and several museums.

Leisure & recreation
All manner of water sports are available either on the seafront at Playa Honda, or in the many nearby resorts. Dinghy sailing on the Mar Menor is very popular as the sea is calm, but you can encounter some brisk breezes.

Horse riding is available locally. There are many fine walks to be had in the surrounding hills. Joggers will enjoy the flat traffic free promenades and quiet roads of the resort and surrounding area. The Mar Menor, and La Manga make for some very pleasant cycle rides. There are dunes on the Mediterranean coast nearby offering a wild and natural landscape for a pleasant day by the sea.

Climate
Playa Honda enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees.

In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate of the area as one of the most equitable in the world - neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days each year making it an ideal all year round destination
