Santa Pola

Santa Pola is located on the Costa Blanca, approximately 20 minutes drive south of Alicante airport. A small fishing port, Santa Pola is famous for its variety of landscapes, from the views of the distant mountains to the wild sand dunes.

Facilities

Santa Pola is less busy and built up than Torrevieja but still has all the facilities you would expect from a small prosperous Spanish coastal town.

Industry
Alongside tourism, Santa Pola is also home to a major salt works and the harbour has the largest amount of fishing boats of any port on the Mediterranean Sea.

Beaches

The town has several wonderful beaches, including over 4km of fine sand and crystalline water. At the Playa Lisa beach you can walk out to sea for some distance and the water still only reaches knee-height!

History

Just offshore lies the island of Tabarca, which belongs to the province of Alicante. This island was once used as a headquarters by the Berber pirates, but nowadays it is a Marine Reserve, abundant with flora and fauna on both the island and in the surrounding waters.

National Park
Las Salinas, next to the town, is a marshland area that is a protected Natural Park and declared an area of special importance for wild birds, including Flamingos and stilt birds.

Activities
Santa Pola is ideal for many nautical sports and air based pursuits.
It is common to see wind surfing, sailing, swimming, fishing, jet skiing and paragliding being practised along the coast.

City review

Santa Pola is a great little town - not so big that you can't explore everything and not so small that you'd be bored. There is lots going on but make sure you go to the tourist office early in your stay otherwise you might never know about things. We only discovered the Cultural Centre in the middle of the town towards the end of our stay, for example. Lots going on there that we missed!

Coast review

There are some vast urbanisations which, unless you're happy to be in a non-Spanish enclave - are probably best avoided. Gran Alacant, for example which many sites list as a part of Santa Pola, is just NOT for me. Alicante itself was a revalation. Its a wonderful town with loads going on, a fascinating history and some amazing architecture. The port area is also well worth exploring but beware of one or two rip-off bars. Go back in land a road or so and there are definitely much better prices to be had for both food and drink. Going inland from the coast, Elche is a great town with wonderful shopping and just outside it is the shoe factory area with outlet stores. Great bargains to be had for those who like shoes. I only bought seven pairs .....!

City review

Lively Spanish town with few British tourists. Lots of restaurants and bars. There are places to visit locally - Alicante, Tabarca and Elche. The beaches are excellent - some shallow and calm, great for children and others which are a bit wilder. A great place to relax and chill out.

Coast review

great coastline - clean and safe beaches.
