Velez de Benaudalla, is a charming, unspoilt white village situated close to the Costa Tropical, in the province of Granada.
Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and beautiful Las Alpujarras region, Velez de Benaudalla enjoys a privileged location, just 10 minutes away from the coast (above Motril and Salobreña) and 55 kilometres from the historical city of Granada.
About town Velez de Benaudalla, although small, is a lively, working town, and as such is well equipped with amenities of all kinds, including shops, banks, chemist, medical, and of course a good choice of bars and restaurants.
The Guadelfeo river is well the locals head in the summer for a refreshing swim. There is also a municipal swimming pool and some nice parks and play areas for children.
Cultural attractions The town has a long and rich history, and the streets and buildings exude the ancient past. Of special interest is the Ulloa Moorish castle, which dates back to the 16th century.
Also of interest are the number of fountains located throughout Velez de Benaudalla. This came about because for the Moors, water was a valuable asset, and was an essential ingredient in the gardens, terraces and plazas. In the centre of town there is actually a natural spring fountain.
There are also several watermills of oil, paper and wheat in the typically Spanish town. Outdoor pursuits In the region of Las Alpujarras expect the most scenic walking routes, you can also partake in rock climbing, skiing, mountain biking, and head to the beaches of Salobrena and Motril for a lovely, relaxing day next to the Mediterranean Sea. Eating out There are some wonderful tapas bars in Velez de Benaudalla where they offer a free tapa with every drink ordered. It’s a great deal, but you do end up drinking more and eating more.
Places to visit It is within easy reach of many historic towns and villages. The area is an ideal spot for those who enjoy walking and sight seeing.
Climate The Costa Tropical takes its name from the sub-tropical climate that it enjoys. With warm winters and long hot summers, the average temperature is around 20C.
