Alcala la Real

The historic town of Alcala la Real is situated in the southern hills of the province of Jaen, nearby are the provinces of Granada and Cordoba.

Alcala la Real is ideally situated just 45 minutes drive from Granada and its airport, and one hour and 30 minutes from the beautiful Mediterranean coastline.

The town provides an ideal base to visit the wonderful province of Jaen; take an excursion to Cazorla, or visit the cities of Jaen or Granada, plus it’s the perfect destination if you want to really enjoy traditional Spanish life and culture.

About town
Alcala la Real is overlooked by a Moorish castle, La Mota, which was reclaimed by the Christians in the fourteenth century and boasts wonderful
panoramic views to the surrounding countryside.

The neighbourhood of El Llanillo, which encloses around the town hall, is an area of particular historic and architectural interest.

The town provides good amenities for tourists, including a medical centre, bus station, museum, library, sports centre, swimming pool, three
supermarkets, shops and a good choice of bars and restaurants.

There is also a large market in the town every Tuesday. The picturesque Plaza Paseo de los Alamos in the middle of this old and historic
town is a good place to take a stroll and sit and soak up the local Andalusian culture.

Cultural attractions
There are several interesting and historical sights to enjoyed in Alcala la Real, including the Moorish castle of La Mota, which dates back to year 727. The Abbey Church with its Gothic and
Renaissance design, the 16th century St Juan Church and the impressive 18th century building, which houses the town hall.

Natural surroundings
Alcala la Real is fairly isolated in its position in Jaen, but the surrounding scenery is strikingly beautiful, in a landscape of olive groves, green vines, whitewashed villages and national
park space. The region suits rural, eco and outdoor pursuits tourists, and those who want to get out and explore the great outdoors.

Climate
The region of Jaen enjoys a sub-tropical climate, typical of inland Andalusia. Temperatures can soar during the summer months and drop quite dramatically during the winter months, sometimes dropping to freezing, with snow in the region.
