Carboneras

The town of Carboneras is located at the start of the Cabo de Gata Nature Park in the province of Almeria and is a popular tourist resort with stunning beaches, beautiful natural surroundings, a 16th century castle and delicious seafood menus. Carboneras enjoys a Mediterranean sub-tropical climate, which means you enjoy the region time of the year. Carboneras offers good amenities and provides an excellent base to explore Cabo de Gata and the Costa Almeria.

The town is situated in the province of Almeria, in the autonomous community of Andalusia.

The name Carboneras, actually translates to coal bunkers, as the whole area was stripped of its forest and used for coal. The region is now dry and arid, but contrasts beautifully with the blue Mediterranean Sea.

The town now thrives on both fishing and tourism; Carboneras is a popular holiday destination with its stunning beaches, charming town, good amenities and interesting cultural attractions.

About town
The 16th century fortified castle dominates the town, as well as two watchtowers that date from the 16th and 18th centuries. There is a lovely promenade in Carboneras, perfect for an evening stroll before dinner; from here you can reach the lighthouse at Mesa Roldan, from which you can take in some wonderful views to the coastline.

There is a market in the town on Thursday, where you can purchase some delicious local

Places to visit
The coastal towns of Mojacar and Garrucha are close by and worth a visit. The entire region of Cabo de Gata is an area of outstanding beauty, and you can spend days exploring the area’s beaches, bays and villages.

Beaches
The beaches of Carboneras are particularly superb; 17 kilometres of fine sand stretches, including the blue flag beach of El Ancon, the nudist beach Los Muertos, Las Marinicas and the 3 kilometre long El Agarrobico.

Eating out
Carboneras has a good selection of dining options, with some excellent seafood restaurants.

Climate
Carboneras, as with all of the Costa Almeria, enjoys an ideal sub-tropical climate throughout the year. The breeze from the sea cools down the hot summer months.

Carboneras review

A proper friendly working fishing port, not just a tourist holiday destination. Facilities include a well stocked supermarket, petrol station, a range of shops, plenty of bars, tapas bars and restaurants - everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Costa Almería reviews

Carboneras is away from the big tourist resorts such as Mojacar, Retamar and Roquetas de Mar so a quieter holiday experience.

Carboneras review

Very friendly people, very quiet, and yet very lively.

Costa Almería reviews

The rest of the coast of Cabo de gata is not so wild because there are so many people smoking, camping, and leaving therir trash behind, so all in all it is disappointing.

Carboneras review

Very quiet and calm place. Make sure that the beach is not closed when you go. Friendly people, making anything to help you in spite of the fact that absolutely noone seems to speak English.

Carboneras review

Amazing little town, has every necessary resource but is not jammed with tourists. Nice, empty sand beach. Lots of great restaurants with generous waiters, some with very elaborate free tapas.

Surrounding region is breathtaking and full of amazing beaches. So many old forts and castles as well.
