Binissalem

Binissalem is a small town, situated in the centre of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands. Although the town is not a typical holiday destination, it is home to Mallorca’s finest hotel. It is also the centre of Mallorca’s winemaking industry, surrounded by bodegas and wine merchants. If you are looking for an upmarket holiday getaway, or if you are a wine lover looking to explore a new wine region, then we thoroughly recommend Binissalem in Mallorca.

Binissalem is located just 8 kilometres from Palma airport, 27 kilometres from the capital city Palma and around 30 kilometres to the nearest beach (20 minutes drive).

About town
Binissalem is a small traditional, working town, where you will find basic amenities to enjoy your holiday. There is an adequate selection of local shops, and a supermarket. Plus a smattering of bars and restaurants, where you will find yourself eating and chatting with the locals.

The town centre has a lovely old quarter, and is dominated by the church spire, head in this direction and you will come to the main town plaza (square), with its friendly, buzzy atmosphere.

Wines of Binissalem
Order wine in most Mallorcan restaurants and it will more than likely come from Binissalem. Bodega is the regions most well known wine. Manto Negro, is a favourite local red and counts for around 50% of red grape production. Other varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Callet, Monastrell, Syrah, Merlot and Tempranillo. White wines produced in the region include Moll (Prensal Blanc), Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay and Moscatel.

Every September a wine festival is held, the Festa d’es Verema, which celebrates the annual grape harvest. Music, dancing, parades and of course the wine is overflowing.

Places to visit
Aside from various bodegas and vineyards, there is a Wax Museum (Museo de Cera), which can be found on the main road from Palma.

You can’t visit Mallorca without visiting the wonderful capital city of Palma, the cultural centre of the island.

Although Binissalem is located in the centre of the island, you are never more than 20 minutes away from the coast, and some of Mallorca’s most stunning ‘calas’ or bays.

Climate
Mallorca enjoys a typical Mediterranean weather, with mild winters and hot summers. During the months of July and August, the weather is hot and beautifully sunny, boasting around 11 hours of sun daily.

During the winter, the evenings can get chilly, but you can often enjoy mild weather and clear blue skies during the daytime.

Binissalem review

We did not stay in the town but the local towns and villages all seemed to be nice and offer a decent selection of shops and restaurants.

Binissalem review

Binissalem was in the middle of wine plant area in rural Mallorca. There are lots of bodegas (wineries) around Binissalem, where you can visit and buy good local wines. The city of Binissalem itself is quiet, and the shopping area in Inca is actually closer to property.
