How to spend a perfect day in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria makes for an ideal day trip. And from the other end of the GG-1, Puerto de Mogán, you can reach the capital in under an hour. Here, in alphabetical order, are what you should see to make your LPA visit a memorable one.

Bodegas Mondalón

Tenerife has developed a reputation for producing fine wine and Lanzarote's amazing La Geria has earned the island deserved acclaim. But oenophiles have plenty of viniculture to enjoy on Gran Canaria. And a great introduction to the GC wine scene can be sampled at the capital's Bodegas Mondalón.

CAAM

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was in the running to be European Capital of Culture 2016. In the end, the city lost out to the Basque Country's San Sebastian. However, there are regular cultural events. Not least at the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno art gallery in the heart of Vegueta.

Caldera de Bandama

The Caldera de Bandama's not far from Bodegas Mondalón. One suspects the guide author who penned the following words about the former had partaken of one glass too many at the latter: "Up in the vineyard nation, around Tafira, is the stunning Caldera de Bandama, a victory pit that the more brave and fit can plummet by walking into." Although this flowery description does capture the sheer drama of one of the island's most celebrated geographical features.

Casa de Cólon

Everybody associates 1492 with Columbus sailing the ocean blue. But whilst he never set foot on America that year, he did disembark in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. To find out why, visit Vegueta's fascinating Casa de Cólon museum.

Castillo de la Luz

Over on the other side of town, there's another historic building which warrants a visit. There are plans for the Castillo de la Luz to open as a museum. Currently, though, it's only accessible by guided tours which you need to arrange in advance.

Catedral de Santa Ana

You can make out the Catedral de Santa Ana from anywhere in Vegueta. It's one of the first sights you'll see as you enter the city on the GC-1. And if you want to avoid the entrance fee, visit the cathedral during one of its mass services.

Centro de Arte La Regenta

Culture vultures will be able to enjoy the rich pickings available at Centro de Arte La Regenta, one of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's premier art galleries. Located at the Parque Santa Catalina end of León y Castillo, it's a short walk from the park's bus station. Exhibitions change on a monthly basis.

Centro de Cultura Contemporánea San Martín

By day, the Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de San Martín's a cutting-edge art gallery. It's a different story when the sun goes down. For by night, the venue transforms itself into one of the most intimate settings for concerts by leading Canarian musicians.

Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo

The Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at its most rural. This living museum boasts flourishing flora emanating from all corners of the world. And, best of all, it's free to enter, providing the cheapest of family excursions.

Mercado Altavista

Join the locals at the Mercado Altavista. Canarian natives easily outnumber the tourists as this is very much an out-of-town-market. Yet, the area's well served by buses and, for the more adventurous traveller, accessible by talking up a ravine.

Mercado de Vegueta

Rather more centrally-located is the Mercado de Vegueta. A fact reflected in its higher prices. This market is also a great place to shelter from April showers, warming up with churros con chocolate (doughnuts with hot chocolate) as you wait for the sunshine to return.

Parque Doramas

Life can be a a walk in the park if you make your way to Parque Doramas. Arguably one of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria's prettiest parks, it can be found behind the grand Hotel Santa Catalina. Head there midday on a Sunday to take advantage of a free show for kids.

Playa de la Laja

If you don't fancy braving the Atlantic waves at Playa de la Laja, you can always bathe in the more tranquil waters of the beach's natural swimming pools. Travelling north from the airport and major resorts on the island, this playa will be the first Las Palmas de Gran Canaria beach you'll see. Look out for the Triton statue on the GC-1 and you'll know you're near.

Playa de las Canteras

Some claim Playa de las Canteras to be Spain's greatest metropolitan beach. Others go further, suggesting that it tops any other stretch of shoreline worldwide. Just shy of 3km, Las Canteras is the longest beach on the island and well worth a stroll along its sand or on the promenade above.
