Arenys de Mar is a traditional fishing town situated on the Costa Brava, just a few kilometres away from the city of Barcelona. The town has a long history and seafaring tradition and is blessed with beautiful beaches and a deep artistic heritage.
The town is ideally located both for the airport, visits to the city of Barcelona and exploring the rest of the Costa Brava coastline and inland Catalonia.
Around town Much of local life centres around the harbour, where much of the economic activity of the town still takes place. There is a fish auction that takes place on the harbourside every afternoon, where you might see sold the fish that ends up on your plate that evening! The harbour also offers mooring for leisure boats and yachts.
In town ‘The Riera’, which translates to dry riverbed, is where the main commercial area lies and where there is a Saturday morning market. There is also a beautiful Art Nouveau market building, which opens every morning and Friday afternoons.
The Lourdes Park is a lovely place to stroll or just to sit and enjoy a shady nook and enjoy people watching in a typical Catalonian village. Beaches There are three beaches in the Arenys de Mar area, the Ponent o Primera, which meets the port on the northern side and where you can fish from the little jetty. The beach has golden sands and calm waters; Cavaio beach offers a wide range of amenities and stretches as far as the district of Canet de Mar. Finally La Musclera is popular with the young locals and is a shingle beach with gentle waters. Places to visit Within the town there are quite a few interesting monuments and buildings that deserve a visit, including the parish church of Santa Maria, which has one of the most important baroque reredos (altar screen) in Catalonia. The church was constructed at the beginning of the 18th century by the sculptor Pau Costa. Head up Church Street and you will find the Marés Museum of Lacemaking and the Mollfulleda Museum of Mineralogy.
On each side of the lower Riera there are a series of charming spots for a walk and some beautiful houses. Here you find some of the defence towers built to protect against pirates, which have been well conserved. Eating out There are plenty of restaurants in town from traditional Spanish and Catalonian establishments, seafood restaurants, to pizzerias and Mexican cuisine. And with the city of Barcelona just a few kilometres away you can take a trip into the city which is home to some of the best restaurants in Spain.
Climate Arenys de Mar enjoys a mild temperate and Mediterranean type climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters.
The main street, La Riera hade a lot of nice restaurants and bars, but the traffic is close to the sittings. The fish restaurant La Marina was excellent. We did not try the restaurants in the harbor. The beaches are nice. One day we made a reservation at the restaurant La Masia close to Villa Mirador, for the day after. We had eaten there once before. When we came to the restaurant it was closed, without any explanation.
